What is research ethics at Wrenford Polytechnic?
Research ethics covers the standards you follow when you conduct applied research, collect data, or work on projects that could affect people, animals, or the environment. At Wrenford Polytechnic, we want your work to be honest, safe, and respectful. Following these rules protects you, your partners, and the college.
Who does this apply to?
These guidelines apply to all students and staff who are leading or taking part in research projects. This includes work done in labs, workshops, field placements, and community partnerships. If your project involves human participants, sensitive data, or outside organisations, you must follow our ethics and compliance steps before you begin.
How do I disclose my research?
Most applied research projects at the college require a simple disclosure so the Research & Innovation office can review them for safety and compliance. Here is how to submit your disclosure:
- Visit the Intellectual property policy page to review the rules that apply to your project.
- Prepare a brief summary of your research goals, the methods you will use, and any materials or data you plan to collect.
- Submit your disclosure form through the Research & Innovation office. You can email the office at [email protected] or visit them in person.
- Wait for a review confirmation. The office will let you know if your project needs additional approval or a timeline adjustment.
When you submit your work, remember that you retain full ownership of your intellectual property. The college cannot require you to sign away your rights.
Are there fees or deadlines?
There is no fee to file an intellectual property disclosure. You must submit your disclosure before you start sharing your work publicly, publishing results, or presenting at a conference. If you are working with an outside partner or a community organisation, plan to submit your paperwork at least two weeks before your planned start date. This gives the review team enough time to check for compliance and safety requirements.
What if I am accused of a research ethics violation?
Research ethics rules are part of the college's broader academic integrity and student conduct policies. If you are asked to clarify your research methods or if a concern is raised about your project, you will be contacted by your program chair or a member of the Student services team. You have the right to ask questions and provide context. If you need support while your case is reviewed, you can meet with a counsellor or ask for a support person to attend meetings with you. The college will guide you through the next steps.
