What this policy covers
Scope: Guidelines on ownership and rights for inventions created by students and staff.
At Wrenford Polytechnic, you own the intellectual property you create during your studies or employment. This includes inventions, software code, designs, research data, and creative works. Our policy protects your rights while setting clear steps for when external partners or industry sponsors are involved in your work.
Who it is for
- Full-time and part-time students working on programs, co-op terms, or student projects.
- Faculty and staff conducting research, teaching, or administrative projects.
- External industry partners sponsoring student projects or research initiatives.
How to disclose an invention
- Complete the disclosure form on the Research & Innovation page.
- Submit the form and any supporting documents to the intellectual property office.
- Wait for a review period of ten business days.
- Meet with a research advisor to discuss ownership and next steps.
There is no fee to file a disclosure. You must submit it before you share the invention publicly, publish it, or present it at a conference. If you are working with a sponsor, include their details in the disclosure form so the office can review any existing agreements.
Working with industry sponsors
If your project is sponsored by a company, the sponsor may request access to the intellectual property or ask you to sign a confidentiality agreement. Wrenford Polytechnic does not require you to sign away your ownership rights. If a sponsor requires a non-disclosure agreement, you must discuss the terms with the research office first. You can present your work in final project showcases and include it in your portfolio, even if a confidentiality agreement is in place.
Commercialisation and sharing your work
If your invention has commercial potential, the research office can help you explore licensing or startup options. You must keep the office updated on any developments. You are also free to share your work for academic purposes, provided you follow the guidelines on the Privacy page and do not breach any valid sponsor agreements.
