Intellectual property rights

What this policy covers

This policy sets out the ownership rules for student work, inventions and creative projects produced during your studies. It applies to all full-time and part-time students at both the Benchlands Campus and the Mercer Street Campus. The goal is to make sure you keep the rights to what you create, while protecting the college's interests when college resources are used.

What you own

In most cases, you own the copyright and intellectual property for the work you create on your own time. This includes assignments, research papers, software code, designs, artwork, and personal inventions. You are free to publish, license, or sell your work without asking for permission.

When the college may have a claim

If you use college equipment, laboratories, or specialized software to develop your project, the college may share ownership. You must declare any project that relies on college resources. The college also retains a non-exclusive licence to use student work for educational and accreditation purposes. If a college grant or a faculty supervisor's direct research funding supports your project, separate terms may apply.

How to register or protect your work

  1. Complete the Student Invention Disclosure Form and submit it to the Research & Innovation office.
  2. Meet with an IP advisor to review your options for copyright, trademark, or patent registration.
  3. Pay the standard administrative fee for filing a formal application.
  4. Submit your materials within thirty days of completing the project.

The office will review your disclosure and advise on the best path. They can also connect you with external legal clinics for low-cost filings.

Fees and deadlines

There is no fee to submit an invention disclosure. A standard filing fee of $150 covers the administrative processing of a formal application. You must submit your disclosure within thirty days of finishing the project to qualify for the college's IP support clinic. Late submissions are still accepted but may require a priority processing fee.

Who to contact
