Advanced analysis of synchronous machines, special motors, and drive systems.
Course overview
Electrical Machines II builds on the principles of electromagnetic induction and basic machine theory introduced in ELEC 1320 Electrical Machines I. You will move from single-phase analysis to the more complex behaviour of three-phase synchronous machines, including alternators and synchronous motors. The course also covers DC machines, induction motor drives, and the electronics that control them.
Through a mix of lectures, laboratory sessions, and problem-solving exercises, you will learn how to model machine performance, calculate efficiency, and understand the role of electrical machines in modern industrial power systems. You will use simulation software to test motor responses under different load conditions before testing physical prototypes in the lab.
