Maintaining your study permit status

What this page covers

This page explains how to keep your study permit valid while you study at Wrenford Polytechnic. It covers the rules regarding full-time enrollment, work limits, and reporting changes to Immigration authorities. Follow these steps to stay compliant with Canadian immigration law and protect your student status.

Who this is for

This information applies to all international students who hold a study permit issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). If you are still applying to Wrenford Polytechnic, see the Apply as an international student page.

Your responsibilities as a student

When you hold a study permit, you must follow every condition printed on the document. The main rules are:

  • Full-time enrollment: You must remain enrolled in a full-time program. If you take a leave of absence or withdraw, you must notify the International Student Office within ten business days. We will report your change to IRCC.
  • Work limits: You may only work on or off campus if your permit specifically allows it. Most full-time students may work up to twenty hours per week during regular academic sessions. You cannot work off campus during scheduled breaks unless IRCC issues a temporary public policy. Always check the IRCC website for the latest rules before accepting a job.
  • Reporting changes: You must tell Wrenford Polytechnic and IRCC if you change your program of study, your mailing address, or your contact information. Use the student portal to update your address. Email the International Student Office immediately if you change programs or take a leave.

How to extend your study permit

If your study permit will expire before you finish your program, you must apply to extend it. Do not wait until the last minute.

  1. Check the expiry date on your current permit.
  2. Start the application process at least ninety days before it expires.
  3. Gather your supporting documents, including a letter of enrolment from the Registrar, an official transcript, and proof of funds.
  4. Submit your application through the IRCC online portal and pay the required government fee.
  5. Send a copy of your application receipt to the International Student Office so we can update your college records.

Maintained status

If you submit your extension application before your current permit expires, you keep your student status in Canada while IRCC processes your application. This is called maintained status. You may continue to study and work under the same conditions as your current permit until you receive a decision. Your college health insurance will continue for a limited time, but you must arrange private coverage if your permit expires while you are waiting.
