Practical nursing instructor Joanne Pettigrew recognised with provincial teaching award
Joanne Pettigrew, a faculty member in the School of Health Sciences at Wrenford Polytechnic, has been selected as a recipient of the provincial excellence in teaching award.
Pettigrew teaches in the Practical Nursing program at the Benchlands Campus. The honour recognises her work in clinical education and her dedication to mentoring students through their training.
"When I first started teaching, I wanted to make sure students felt supported in the simulation lab and in the field," Pettigrew said. "This award belongs to my students, who push me to be a better educator every day."
Pettigrew has spent over fifteen years in healthcare and education. She teaches patient care fundamentals and clinical reasoning to Practical Nursing students in their second year. Her teaching style focuses on hands-on practice and clear feedback.
She also helps students prepare for their provincial licensing exams. Many of her graduates now work at regional hospitals and community health centres across the province.
The selection committee noted her long-term impact on the nursing program. They praised her work in updating simulation scenarios to match current clinical standards.
Wrenford Polytechnic is one of several colleges in the province that deliver the Practical Nursing diploma. The program includes classroom study and clinical placements at local health facilities.
Students who want to learn more about the Practical Nursing program can visit the program page or contact the Admissions office.
Pettigrew will receive her award at the provincial ceremony in early December.
