Securing patient data through applied research
A team of students from the Cybersecurity graduate certificate program has completed a significant applied research project with the Wrenford Polytechnic Health Centre, developing a new protocol to strengthen the security of patient information networks.
The initiative, led by faculty advisor Anjali Deshmukh, chair of the Computing & Information Technology department, focused on creating a robust, low-latency encryption layer for the Health Centre's internal data systems. The project addresses the growing need for secure handling of sensitive medical records in increasingly connected healthcare environments.
"The students demonstrated exceptional skill in applying their classroom knowledge to a real-world problem," said Deshmukh. "They identified vulnerabilities in the existing system architecture and designed a solution that not only meets current privacy standards but is also scalable for future growth."
The new protocol integrates seamlessly with the Health Centre's existing infrastructure, ensuring that patient data remains protected without disrupting clinical workflows. The research was conducted under the supervision of the College's Research & Innovation office, which supports projects that benefit the local community and industry partners.
Students involved in the project noted that the experience provided invaluable insight into the practical challenges of cybersecurity in a healthcare setting. "Working directly with the Health Centre's IT team allowed us to see how theoretical concepts translate into daily operations," said one student contributor. "The feedback from the clinicians was immediate and very helpful."
The project highlights the strong ties between Wrenford Polytechnic's School of Computing & Academic Studies and local healthcare providers. It also serves as a portfolio piece for the graduating students, showcasing their ability to deliver professional-grade security solutions.
The Health Centre has committed to implementing the new protocol across its primary patient management systems by the end of the academic year. The research findings have been documented and are available for review through the College's Research & Innovation office.
