Modern infrastructure for next-generation engineers
The School of Energy & Applied Engineering at Wrenford Polytechnic has completed a major upgrade to the electrical power distribution and control systems in the Escarpment Building laboratories. The project ensures that students in Electrical, Mechanical, and Power Engineering Technology programs have access to modern, reliable infrastructure that mirrors current industry standards.
The upgrades focused on the lab spaces within the Escarpment Building, which houses the school's primary teaching and testing facilities. New power conditioning units, automated load-balancing panels, and upgraded circuit protection systems were installed across multiple floors. These improvements allow the labs to safely handle high-voltage experiments and complex power distribution simulations that were previously limited by older infrastructure.
"Providing students with the tools they will use in their careers is central to our mission," said Rajesh Venkataraman, dean of the School of Energy & Applied Engineering. "These upgraded systems allow our instructors to run more advanced scenarios in class, giving students hands-on experience with the same types of grid management and power quality challenges they will face in the workplace."
The improvements support several key programs, including Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Engineering Technician, and the Bachelor of Applied Technology — Advanced Manufacturing. Students in these programs will now be able to conduct more extensive testing on renewable energy integration, industrial automation, and smart grid technologies without the previous constraints of the older electrical systems.
The project was carried out in coordination with Wrenford Polytechnic's maintenance teams and IT Service Desk to ensure minimal disruption to the academic calendar. Work was scheduled during breaks and outside of core lab hours to keep classrooms and workshops open for students throughout the term.
Students can access the upgraded labs during regular class schedules. The School of Energy & Applied Engineering encourages students to check their course outlines for specific lab access times and to follow all safety protocols when working with the new equipment.
