Program Description

Path planning, obstacle avoidance, and localization for mobile robotic platforms.

Course overview

Autonomous Navigation covers the core techniques that allow mobile robots to move safely and efficiently without human intervention. You will study how robots perceive their surroundings, plan safe routes, and adjust their path in real time when obstacles appear. The course focuses on practical implementation using sensors, controllers, and simulation tools commonly used in industry.

Who takes this course

Prerequisites

You must have completed ELEC 5670 Sensors and Actuators and ELEC 5260 Robotics Kinematics, or have equivalent knowledge, before enrolling. These foundations ensure you can work with sensor data and mechanical constraints from day one.

Credits: 3 · Hours: 60

Prerequisites

Learning outcomes

  • Design path-planning algorithms for mobile robots in structured and unstructured environments.
  • Implement sensor-fusion techniques for real-time localization and mapping.
  • Develop obstacle-avoidance systems using lidar and camera inputs.
  • Evaluate navigation performance using standard simulation benchmarks.
