What is an overaward?
An overaward happens when you receive more financial aid than you are eligible for. This can involve government grants, provincial or federal loans, or institutional bursaries. Common reasons include changes in your family income, a tuition refund that frees up aid eligibility, or receiving multiple awards that cannot be combined. When your funding exceeds what the rules allow, the extra amount becomes a debt you must repay.
Who needs to repay?
If you receive a notice from Student Financial Aid stating you have an overaward, you are responsible for the balance. This applies to all sources of funding, including government loans, provincial grants, and college bursaries. You will see the overaward listed on your student account summary.
How to check your balance
Log in to myWrenford and navigate to the student financial aid section. Your account summary will show any overaward amounts, the source of the funding, and the current balance. You can also review your award letters to see which programs were adjusted.
Steps to arrange repayment
- Read your overaward notice carefully. It will explain why the balance was created and how much you owe.
- Contact the Student Financial Aid office to discuss your situation. They can confirm the exact amount and answer questions about the debt.
- Choose a repayment method. You can pay the full balance at once, or you can request a monthly payment plan through myWrenford.
- Complete the Repayment Agreement Form in your portal. This locks in your payment schedule and stops any collection steps.
- Make your first payment by the deadline shown in your agreement. Late payments may affect your future eligibility for aid.
Deadlines and fees
Repayment typically begins within thirty days of the overaward notice. There is no fee to set up a payment plan or to submit a repayment agreement. If you owe a government loan, standard interest rules apply from the date the overaward was created. For institutional bursaries, the balance must be cleared before you can register for future terms or receive your diploma.
