What this code covers
The Student Code of Conduct (Non-Academic) outlines the standards and expectations for student behaviour at Wrenford Polytechnic. It balances your rights and responsibilities with the need to maintain a safe, respectful, and professional learning environment. All students are expected to behave responsibly, respect the rights of others, treat people with dignity, follow applicable laws, and avoid bullying or harassing behaviour.
Who it applies to
The code applies to all students enrolled at Wrenford Polytechnic. It covers behaviour that occurs on college premises, during college-related activities (including online classes and digital communications), or off campus if the activity is sponsored by the college or if the behaviour negatively impacts your participation in college programs or the wellbeing of the college community.
Addressing concerns early
If you experience or witness behaviour that concerns you, try to address it early and directly whenever it is safe to do so. You can seek support and guidance from your instructor, Student Services, or Campus Security. For emergencies requiring immediate assistance, call 911 first, then contact Campus Security at 519-555-0176. You can also explore conflict resolution resources through the Student Association or Counselling & Wellness. Keep the matter confidential and involve only those who need to know.
Types of violations
Below are examples of non-academic misconduct. This list is not exhaustive:
- Dangerous or disruptive behaviour, including causing disruption in learning environments or engaging in conduct that intimidates or demeans others.
- Harassment or discrimination, including sexualized violence or acts of intimidation.
- Endangering the health, safety, or wellbeing of any person, or damaging college property.
- Theft, damage to property, or unauthorized access to college facilities.
- Providing false information or documents to college representatives with the intent to deceive.
- Violating provincial liquor laws or college policies on alcohol and cannabis, or possessing, using, or distributing illegal substances.
- Unsafe conduct in academic settings, including on the shop floor, in laboratories, or at worksites. Students must follow occupational health and safety rules, use required personal protective equipment, avoid impairment from substances, and report hazards immediately.
- Possessing, carrying, or storing weapons or dangerous substances on campus.
- Abusing information technology or electronic devices, or failing to comply with the college Technology use guidelines.
How a report is handled
If you believe a student has violated the code, you can submit a conduct report. Here is how the process generally works:
Step 1: Assessment
Student Services reviews the report to determine if the behaviour may violate the code. We assess risk, consult with Campus Security if needed, and explore informal resolution or conflict transformation where appropriate.
Step 2: Investigation
If the behaviour is deemed a potential violation, an investigator from Student Services is assigned. Interim measures may be applied to protect everyone involved, such as restricting access to certain areas or limiting contact between individuals. The investigation is private and confidential. The investigator will interview the reporter, the student in question, and witnesses, and gather any relevant evidence.
Step 3: Findings and outcomes
Once the investigation is complete, the investigator determines whether a violation occurred on the balance of probability. If there is no violation, the case is closed. If a violation is found, Student Services determines the appropriate outcome based on the severity, the student's attitude, prior conduct, and the impact on others.
Possible outcomes
Outcomes may include a formal warning, referral to support services, a support agreement, required educational activities or workshops, restorative justice or conflict mediation, restriction of campus privileges, a move to a different class, suspension of registration, or suspension from the college. Students have the right to appeal a decision through the Student conduct hearings process.
