What you can do
The Falls Library & Learning Commons on the Benchlands Campus has a small 3D printing and scanning lab. You can use the printers to make prototypes for class projects, personal learning models, or small parts for your portfolio. The lab also has a 3D scanner so you can digitise objects and turn them into digital models.
The service is open to all currently registered full-time and part-time students. You do not need a design degree to use it, but you must follow the safety rules and file guidelines.
How to book and use the lab
- Prepare your files. Make sure your model is in a supported format (see below).
- Visit the Learning Commons desk in the Falls Library & Learning Commons. Tell the staff you want to use the 3D printer or scanner.
- Fill out a quick request form at the desk. You will need your student card.
- Submit your file. A staff member will check the model for errors before it prints.
- Pick up your print or scanned model within two business days. Unclaimed items are held for thirty days before being transferred to the Wrenford Police Service.
If you need help with the design software, drop by the Learning Commons desk for a free one-on-one tutorial. Groups of two to six people are allowed per room.
File format requirements
The printers only accept standard 3D model files. Send your work in one of these formats:
- STL (Stereolithography)
- OBJ (Wavefront Object)
- 3MF (3D Manufacturing Format)
Do not send encrypted or password-protected files. The staff cannot open them. Large files (over 50 megabytes) may take longer to process. If your file is too big, use the IT Service Desk to compress it or ask for help at the Learning Commons.
Fees and limits
Printing is not free. The college charges a small fee based on the amount of material used and the time the machine runs. The exact cost shows on your request form before you approve it.
- Small prints (under 20 grams): $2.50
- Medium prints (20 to 100 grams): $8.00
- Large prints (over 100 grams): $15.00
- 3D scanning: $5.00 per object
You can pay by student card or at the SU. Fees are added to your student account each term. If you do not pay, the service desk will hold your prints until the balance is cleared.
You can print up to three items per week. This limit keeps the queue fair for everyone. If you have a big project for a class, talk to your instructor. They can email the library to ask for an exception to the weekly limit.
Rules for the lab
Safety comes first. Please follow these rules:
- Do not print anything illegal, dangerous, or offensive. The staff will refuse to print any model that breaks college policy.
- Remove your finished print as soon as it is done. Do not leave models on the printer bed.
- Do not touch the hot nozzles or the build plates while the machine is running.
- Report any strange smells or noises to the staff immediately.
If you break equipment by ignoring the rules, you will be charged for the repair or replacement. The IT Service Desk handles all equipment damage reports.
