Who needs a study permit
You need a study permit if you plan to study at Wrenford Polytechnic for more than six months. If your program is shorter, you may not need one, but you should verify your situation on the International student FAQ. All international students must maintain valid immigration status while in Canada. This means following all rules set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and keeping your permit current.
How to apply
You must apply for your study permit before you arrive in Canada. Use the IRCC online portal to submit your application. You will need to upload your letter of acceptance from Wrenford Polytechnic, proof that you can cover your tuition and living costs, and a copy of your valid passport. Depending on your home country, you may also need a Temporary Resident Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization. Processing times vary by location, so submit your application as soon as you receive your acceptance letter. Do not book travel until you receive your approval letter in the mail.
Arriving in Canada
When you arrive at the border, a Canada Border Services Agency officer will review your documents. Bring your approval letter, letter of acceptance, passport, and proof of funds. The officer will check your details and issue your study permit. Verify that all personal information and conditions on the permit are correct. If you see an error, tell the officer immediately so they can fix it before you leave the airport.
Extending your study permit
If your study permit expires before you finish your program, you must apply to extend it. You should submit your application at least two months before your current permit expires. Late applications can lead to a loss of status. You can apply online through your IRCC account. Upload a current confirmation of enrolment from Wrenford Polytechnic and an official transcript. If you need help gathering documents, contact the International office.
Maintained status
If you apply to extend your study permit before it expires, you are allowed to stay in Canada and continue studying under maintained status while IRCC processes your application. You must remain in Canada and follow all conditions of your original permit. If your permit expires and you have not applied for an extension, you must stop studying and leave Canada until you receive a decision.
Conditions of your permit
Your study permit lists specific conditions you must follow. You must stay enrolled at Wrenford Polytechnic and make steady progress toward completing your program. You may be allowed to work on or off campus, but you must follow the limits listed on your permit. If you need to change any conditions, you must apply to IRCC before making changes. Failing to follow these rules can result in losing your status.
