Off-campus housing guide

Who this guide is for

This guide covers the steps you need to take when looking for an apartment, a room in a house, or a shared suite off campus. It is for any student who will not be staying in Wrenford Polytechnic residence during their program.

Where to look and how to start

Housing near the Benchlands Campus and the Mercer Street Campus fills up quickly in August and January. Start your search at least two months before your term begins. You can search online rental boards, talk to other students in your program, or ask the Residence office for a list of local landlords. Always check that a listing is real before you send any money. Scammers often post fake ads that look too cheap. Do not travel to Wrenford until your housing is confirmed.

Understanding leases and tenants rights

A lease is a legal contract between you and a landlord. In Ontario, all residential tenancies are covered by the provincial tenancy rules. Before you sign, read the document carefully. Make sure you know the exact monthly rent amount, which utilities (heat, water, electricity, internet) are included, and the start and end dates of the lease. Take photos of any existing damage when you move in and give a copy to your landlord. This protects you when you move out.

Budgeting for your new home

Living off campus means you pay for your own space. Rent in Wrenford varies depending on the neighbourhood and the type of building. Set a monthly budget that covers base rent, utilities, groceries, and transit. If you live near the Mercer Street Campus, you will need to use the City of Wrenford municipal lots. Students living near the Benchlands Campus can use Lot C or Lot D if they have a permit. You can also use Wrenford Transit routes 3 and 7 to get to either campus.

Important deadlines and moving in

Most leases for the fall term start on August 1 or September 1. Winter term leases usually start on January 1. If you need a roommate, you can submit a roommate matching request form through the Residence office before the deadline.
