When you need to step away
If you are dealing with a serious illness, injury, or mental health challenge, you can take a medical leave of absence. This option is for any full-time or part-time student who cannot continue their classes because of a documented medical or psychological condition. Taking a leave protects your academic record and gives you the time you need to recover.
How to start the process
Your first step is to speak with a counsellor at the Counselling & Wellness office. Bring a medical certificate from your doctor, nurse practitioner, or specialist that confirms your condition and states you need time away from studies. The counsellor will review your documentation and help you complete the Withdrawal or Course Drop form. You will also need to submit this form to the Registrar to make the leave official in your file.
Refunds and fees
Refunds depend on when you withdraw during the academic term. Full-time students receive a 100% tuition refund if they withdraw before classes start, a 75% refund during the first week, and a 50% refund up to the add/drop deadline. Part-time and online students get a 100% refund if they withdraw more than four weeks before the start date, and a 50% refund within four weeks of the start date. Please note that ancillary fees and residence fees are not refunded when you take a leave. Refund requests usually take four to six business days to process after you submit the form. If you need a copy of your counselling file for your medical leave claim, there is a $15 administrative fee, and requests must be made in writing at least ten business days in advance.
Returning to your program
When you feel ready to resume your studies, you must notify the college before the new term begins. Contact the Registrar to confirm your return date and update your student record. You will also need to provide a fresh medical clearance certificate from your healthcare provider. It is a good idea to meet with an academic advisor to plan your course schedule and discuss any academic accommodations you might need. If you receive government student loans or grants, contact Student Financial Aid to adjust your funding and ensure your payment plan stays on track.
