What is a safety escort?
A safety escort is a procedure for booking a free, confidential escort service between campus buildings or to your vehicle at night. Campus Security officers will walk or drive with you to ensure you get to your destination safely. This service is available any time of day or night. You can use it if you are walking across campus late, heading to your car after evening classes, or simply want peace of mind while travelling between the Benchlands and Mercer Street campuses.
Who can use it?
Any student, staff member, or visitor on campus can request an escort. You do not need to be in a hurry or feel in immediate danger. If you just want someone to walk with you, we are happy to help. The service is confidential, and your request will not be recorded in any academic or disciplinary file.
How to book an escort
Booking an escort is quick and easy. Follow these steps:
- Call the Campus Security main line at 519-555-0176. This number is staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
- Tell the dispatcher your current location and where you need to go. If you are on the Benchlands Campus, mention the building name and room number. If you are at the Mercer Street Campus, provide the street address and suite number.
- If you are already inside a building, give the room number or a landmark near you.
- An officer will meet you at your location or pick you up in a patrol vehicle. They will stay with you until you reach your destination.
If you are in an emergency, call 911 first. Campus Security will assist as soon as it is safe to do so.
Fees and deadlines
There is no fee for emergency procedures, safety escorts, or reporting concerns. The service is completely free for all students, staff, and visitors. You can book an escort at any time, and there are no deadlines to use the service. We encourage you to plan ahead if you have a late lab or study session so an officer can be scheduled for your walk.
