School of Construction & the Environment

School of Construction & the Environment

Learn how to design, build, and protect the spaces we live in at the School of Construction & the Environment. You will work in hands-on workshops and modern labs on the Benchlands Campus. Our programs prepare you for careers in architecture, civil engineering, and environmental science. The school is led by Dean Fiona Gallagher, who brings decades of industry experience to guide your studies.

Whether you want to draft blueprints for new buildings, manage large construction projects, or test water and soil quality, you will find a program that fits your goals. All our programs are delivered full-time during the academic year. Many include co-op work terms so you can graduate with real job experience.

Our departments

The school is made up of three departments. Each department focuses on a different part of the built and natural environment.

  • Architectural & Building Technology covers building design, interior spaces, and construction management. You will learn to use digital tools to plan structures that are safe, efficient, and ready for the future.
  • Civil Engineering & Geomatics focuses on roads, bridges, and land mapping. You will study how to move earth, design infrastructure, and use surveying equipment to shape the landscape.
  • Environmental Technology Department looks at water, air, and soil. You will learn how to monitor pollution, treat wastewater, and develop sustainable practices to protect natural resources.

Workshops and labs

Most of your learning happens outside the classroom. The Kingfisher Building holds our main classrooms, but you will spend plenty of time in the workshops and labs across the Benchlands Campus. You will use industry-standard software, run material tests, and collaborate on team projects that mimic real jobs.
