Program Description

Covers electronic control systems, telematics, and diagnostic software for modern heavy equipment.

About this course

Heavy equipment is no longer just hydraulics and mechanics; it is a computer on wheels. HVEQ 3610 Heavy Equipment Electronics gives you the skills to understand the electronic brains behind modern machines. You will learn how electronic control modules, sensors, and actuators work together to manage engine performance, transmission shifting, and hydraulic functions.

The course covers the diagnostic software and tools that technicians use every day. You will practice reading data streams, interpreting fault codes, and troubleshooting communication networks like CAN bus. You will also explore telematics systems, which allow fleet managers to track equipment location and health remotely.

Because modern electronics are sensitive, safety is a major focus. You will learn how to work safely with high-voltage systems and how to protect delicate electronic components from damage during testing and repair. This course is designed to prepare you for the next generation of heavy equipment repair.

Who takes this course

This course is an elective for students in the Heavy Equipment Techniques program. It is also open to other students in the School of Skilled Trades & Transportation who have completed the required prerequisites. If you are interested in the technical side of modern machinery, this course will give you a strong foundation in electronic diagnostics.
