Who this is for
Every student, staff member, and visitor on campus needs to know these steps. The procedures cover both the Benchlands Campus and the Mercer Street Campus.
In an emergency
If someone is in immediate danger, call 911 first. Then call Campus Security at 519-555-0176 to let them know about the situation on campus. Security staff are on duty twenty-four hours a day. If you need a safety escort to your car or to a nearby transit stop, you can request a safety escort. There is no fee for this service.
Fire alarms and evacuations
When a fire alarm sounds, leave the building through the nearest safe exit. Walk to the designated muster point outside and stay away from the building. Do not use the elevators. Wait for instructions from Campus Security or the Emergency Response Team. If you have a disability and cannot use the stairs, call 911 and then call Campus Security. You can also find more details on accessibility at Wrenford Polytechnic.
Tornado warning
If a tornado warning is issued for the City of Wrenford, move to an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor. Stay away from windows. Listen for announcements over the campus speakers or on your phone. Do not leave the safe area until Campus Security gives the all-clear.
Medical emergency
If you or someone else needs immediate medical care, call 911. Campus Security will meet emergency responders at the scene and direct them to the right building and room. If you need first aid for a minor injury, visit the Health Centre during business hours or call Campus Security for an after-hours referral.
Armed intruder or dangerous person
If you hear about a potentially violent person on campus, Campus Security will alert 911 and the Emergency Response Team. You may be asked to shelter in place. Lock the doors, turn off the lights, draw the blinds, and move away from the windows. Wait for instructions over the speakers or your phone.
Hazardous material spill or natural gas leak
If you smell gas or see a chemical spill, leave the area right away. Do not touch switches or use your phone in the affected area. Call 911 and then 519-555-0176. Wait for emergency services to arrive.
Residence emergencies
If you live in Larch House or Ashgrove House, the fire alarm system works the same way as the academic buildings. If the alarm sounds, leave the building immediately. If you need help evacuating, call 911 and then 519-555-0176. The Residence Life team and Campus Security will help you reach a safe area. You can find more details on the Residence page.
Reporting safety concerns
If you notice a broken lock, a dark hallway, or suspicious behaviour, you should report it. You can report a safety concern through the campus security portal or by calling 519-555-0176. Reporting a concern does not cost anything and can be done anonymously if you prefer.
Mental health support
If an emergency leaves you feeling anxious or overwhelmed, you can talk to a professional. Visit the Counselling & Wellness office or call 519-555-0184. All sessions are confidential.
Fees and deadlines
There are no fees for emergency procedures, safety escorts, or reporting concerns. These services are available at all times during the academic year. If you need to update your emergency contact information, you can do so through the student portal or by visiting the Registrar.
