How many sessions can I book?
You can book one appointment at a time. The number of sessions you will need depends on your situation. Your counsellor will work with you to set goals and decide how many meetings are helpful. Most students see a counsellor between three and six times. If you need more sessions, your counsellor will book your next appointment during your visit.
Is there a cost for counselling?
Counselling sessions are included in your student fees at no extra charge. If you need a copy of your counselling file for a third party, you will pay a $15 administrative fee. This covers the preparation of the first copy.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book an appointment online through the student portal, or call us at 519-555-0184. Book at least two business days in advance. You must cancel or reschedule at least twenty-four hours before your appointment. If you miss a session without cancelling, you must wait five business days before booking again.
What should I prepare before my first visit?
Arrive with a valid student photo ID. We advise you to read the Information and Consent to Counsel Form before you come. Your counsellor will review it with you at the start of your session, so reading it ahead of time will save time. You do not need to write anything down or prepare a list of problems.
Can I bring a friend or family member?
Yes, you may bring a support person to your appointment. Please note that we cannot guarantee the confidentiality of the session if someone else is present, as they are not bound by professional privacy rules. If you want a completely private conversation, we recommend coming alone.
How do I request my counselling file?
If you need a copy of your counselling file, you must submit a Counselling file access request in writing. We process these requests at least ten business days in advance. A $15 administrative fee applies for the first copy. Please allow extra time over the summer or between terms.
How long are my records kept?
Counselling notes are retained securely for ten years after a student leaves the college. After that, they are destroyed according to provincial privacy law. Only authorised staff in the Counselling & Wellness office can view these records.
Who knows that I am seeing a counsellor?
Your attendance is known only to the receptionist who books your appointment and the counsellor you meet with. We follow a strict code of ethics. We will not share your attendance or the content of your meetings with anyone else without your written permission, unless required by law. You can discuss any privacy concerns with your counsellor during your first visit.
What if my counsellor is not a good fit?
We encourage you to meet with the same counsellor to build trust and continuity. However, the relationship between you and your counsellor matters. If you feel you are not connecting well, you can ask reception to schedule an appointment with a different counsellor. You can review the team's profiles on the Counselling & Wellness page.
Is counselling only for serious mental health concerns?
No. Counselling helps with everyday challenges, such as stress about course loads, relationship issues, or adjusting to college life. If you are in crisis or need immediate support, please visit Crisis support and urgent care or call 911 in an emergency.
