Technology access resources

What you can access

Wrenford Polytechnic provides information on screen readers, speech-to-text software, and hardware loans available through the library. These tools help you read, write, and study independently. You can use them for your courses, assignments, and exams.

Who it is for

Any student can use these resources. You do not need a specific diagnosis to try them. You can use this technology if you have a visual impairment, a physical disability, a learning difference, or if you just want a different way to take notes. The tools work on your own laptop, tablet, or a library computer.

How to get started

Follow these steps to set up your technology:

  1. Book an appointment with an Accessibility Specialist. Find the booking link on the Accessibility Services page.
  2. Tell the specialist which tools you want to try. We have options for reading, writing, and studying.
  3. If you need a loaner device, the specialist will check your eligibility and walk you through the checkout process at the Library.
  4. You can also download most software to your own device. The library staff will show you how to install it and test it before you leave.

Software you can use

  • Screen readers: These programs read the text on your screen out loud. They help you navigate websites, course materials, and your student portal without looking at the display.
  • Speech-to-text software: You can speak your assignments and notes into a microphone. The software turns your voice into text so you do not have to type everything.
  • Literacy and reading tools: These programs read assigned readings aloud to you. They also offer word prediction, spell checking, digital highlighters, and graphic organizers to help you take notes and study.

Hardware loans

If you cannot use a personal device, you can borrow hardware from the library for the term. Available items include laptops, portable document scanners, and refreshable braille displays. You must bring a photo ID and your student card to check out a device. The library will test the device with you before you leave to make sure it works for your needs.

Fees and deadlines

There is no fee to use the software or to borrow hardware. You must book your appointment at least one week before the term starts so we have time to set up your accounts. If you need a loaner device, please request it at least two weeks before you need it. Late requests are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
