Industry portfolio review connects students with employers
Wrenford Polytechnic's Graphic & Interactive Design students showed off their best work to representatives from major advertising agencies on November 12. The annual industry portfolio review gave students a chance to present their portfolios, receive feedback, and network with potential employers.
Over forty students from the Graphic & Interactive Design program participated in the event, which was held at the Market Square Studios on the Mercer Street Campus. Attendees included creative directors, art directors, and hiring managers from regional and national firms looking for entry-level designers, motion graphics artists, and interactive media specialists.
Real-world feedback
The event focused on practical critique and career guidance. Agency representatives reviewed student portfolios ranging from brand identity projects and packaging design to digital campaigns and user interface mock-ups. Many students received immediate feedback on their work, helping them refine their presentation skills before job interviews.
"This event is a vital bridge between the classroom and the industry," said Theo Marchetti, chair of the Digital Media & Design department. "Our students put in a lot of effort to create professional-quality work, and having industry leaders review their portfolios helps them understand what employers are looking for right now."
Students also had the opportunity to speak with recruiters from the School of Business & Media's marketing and public relations departments, who were present to discuss how design skills complement business careers.
Building industry connections
The portfolio review is organized in partnership with Co-op & Career Services, which helps coordinate employer participation and ensures that students get the most out of the networking opportunities. Many attendees have hired Graphic & Interactive Design graduates in the past, and several agencies use the event as a scouting ground for co-op and full-time positions.
"We want our students to leave the program with not just a strong portfolio, but also a strong professional network," said Bettina Kraus, director of Co-op & Career Services. "Events like this give students a head start on their job search and help them build relationships that can last well beyond graduation."
The next industry portfolio review is scheduled for the fall of 2026. Students are encouraged to start building their portfolios early in the program and to take advantage of the feedback sessions offered by faculty and industry reviewers throughout their studies.
