Hands-on training with the latest technology
Wrenford Polytechnic's School of Skilled Trades & Transportation has welcomed a new fleet of training vehicles to the Automotive & Heavy Equipment department. The partnership with a regional manufacturer gives Automotive Service Technician apprentices direct access to the latest vehicle models, ensuring they graduate with skills that match current industry standards.
The new fleet includes the manufacturer's latest hybrid and electric powertrains, as well as advanced driver-assistance systems. Students in the Automotive Service Technician (Apprenticeship) program will use these vehicles to practice diagnostics, maintenance, and repair procedures in a controlled shop environment.
"Having access to the actual vehicles our students will work on in the field makes a huge difference," says Ricardo Salvatore, chair of the Automotive & Heavy Equipment department. "They aren't just learning theory; they are troubleshooting real systems with real tools, right here in the Tamarack Building shops."
The training fleet complements the program's co-operative education component. Co-op programs at Wrenford Polytechnic include three paid work terms, and this new equipment allows students to build a stronger foundation before they head out to their placements with local dealerships and service centres.
Apprentices can expect to see the new vehicles integrated into their coursework starting in the Winter 2026 term. The School of Skilled Trades & Transportation also offers in-school training for other trades, including Carpentry, Plumbing, and Electrical Techniques, all of which benefit from updated equipment and industry partnerships.
