Sofia receives academic excellence award
Sofia, Medical Laboratory Technology, has been named the recipient of the Dean's Excellence Award for her final-year research paper on diagnostic methods. The award recognises outstanding academic achievement and scholarly contribution within the School of Health Sciences.
Sofia's paper, titled "Optimising Specimen Processing for High-Volume Diagnostics," was reviewed by the program's faculty and selected for its practical application in clinical settings. Her research explored ways to reduce turnaround times for laboratory results without compromising accuracy, a topic that is highly relevant to healthcare operations across the province.
"Sofia's work demonstrates the kind of problem-solving mindset we aim to develop in our students," said Margaret Ellison, chair of the Nursing department. "She took complex data and turned it into actionable insights that could help labs serve patients faster."
During her time in the Medical Laboratory Technology program, Sofia also served as a peer tutor for first-year students in the diagnostic sciences stream. She balanced full-time coursework with her research, maintaining a perfect academic record while contributing to the program's simulation centre exercises.
"I wanted to find a way to make the diagnostic process more efficient for busy labs," Sofia said. "The feedback from the faculty and the clinical preceptors has been incredibly encouraging."
Sofia is the second Medical Laboratory Technology student to receive the Dean's Excellence Award in the past three years. The program's recent graduates have gone on to work at regional hospitals and private diagnostic laboratories throughout Ontario.
Sofia plans to pursue a career in clinical laboratory management. She will begin her role at a regional diagnostic centre in the spring.
