Top of her class
Maya, Practical Nursing, has graduated at the top of her cohort from the two-year diploma program, earning honours after completing rigorous clinical placements at local hospitals.
The Practical Nursing program at Wrenford Polytechnic is known for its blend of classroom theory and hands-on training in the simulation centre at Corvid Hall, as well as field placements in community health settings.
"Maya demonstrated exceptional clinical judgment and compassion throughout her placements," said Margaret Ellison, chair of the Nursing department. "She was consistently the student other learners looked to for guidance during complex scenarios."
During her third term, Maya completed her clinical rotations at Wrenford General Hospital and the Benchlands Community Health Centre, where she assisted in patient assessments, medication administration, and care planning under the supervision of registered nurses and preceptors.
Her capstone project focused on improving patient handover communication in emergency departments, a topic she researched in collaboration with nursing staff at Wrenford General.
"I wanted to make sure the transition of care between shifts was as clear as possible for both patients and staff," Maya said. "It was a privilege to work alongside nurses who showed me what dedication to this profession really looks like."
Maya is one of 24 students to complete the Practical Nursing program this term. The program maintains a low student-to-instructor ratio in clinical settings to ensure each student receives personalised feedback.
Graduates of the program are eligible to write the National Practical Nursing Licensing Examination. Maya plans to write the exam in October and has already accepted a position as a registered practical nurse at Wrenford General Hospital.
The Practical Nursing program is offered at the Benchlands Campus with intakes in September and January. For more information, visit the program page.
