Program Description
Practical application of shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) on various plate positions and joint configurations for fabrication students.
About this course
Shielded Metal Arc Welding, or SMAW, is one of the most versatile welding processes used in fabrication and construction. In this course, you will learn to set up the equipment, select the right electrodes, and produce strong welds on steel plate. You will practice in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions, focusing on joint consistency and weld quality.
Working in the Tamarack Building shops, you will follow strict safety protocols and develop the muscle memory needed for professional-grade work. This course is a core component of the Welding & Fabrication Technician program.
Who takes this course
- Welding & Fabrication Technician
Credits: 1.5 · Hours: 45
Prerequisites
- WELD 1600 Welding Safety Fundamentals
Learning outcomes
- Set up and operate SMAW power sources and equipment safely.
- Strike and maintain an arc in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions.
- Select appropriate electrode types and sizes for carbon steel plates.
- Produce sound welds on groove and fillet joint configurations.
- Inspect finished welds for common defects such as porosity and lack of fusion.
Evaluation
