Introduction to arc and gas welding techniques with emphasis on safety protocols and material preparation.

About this course

MILL 1190 introduces the fundamentals of arc and gas welding with a strong focus on safety protocols and material preparation. You will learn to set up and operate standard welding equipment, including shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and oxy-fuel setups. The course covers essential shop safety rules, proper use of personal protective equipment, and the safe handling of compressed gas cylinders.

Through hands-on practice in the Tamarack Building shops, you will prepare and fit-up mild steel plates for welding. You will execute basic bead runs in flat and horizontal positions, learning to identify and correct common defects. This course is designed for students who must be at least 16 years old to enter the shops and who have signed the required consent forms if under 18.
