Marcus opens welding business after completing diploma

From Tamarack Building to downtown studio

Wrenford Polytechnic graduate Marcus, Welding & Fabrication Technician, has opened his own custom metalwork studio in downtown Wrenford. The new business, located on Mercer Street, specialises in bespoke architectural ironwork, gallery sculptures, and small-batch fabrication for local tradespeople.

Marcus completed his diploma at the Benchlands Campus, spending his final year honing his skills in the Tamarack Building's welding bays. He says the hands-on training and the shop safety protocols he learned at Wrenford Polytechnic gave him the confidence to start his own venture.

A foundation built on practical skills

"The program didn't just teach me how to run a machine; it taught me how to read blueprints, calculate tolerances, and manage a project from start to finish," Marcus says. "When I walk into my shop now, I see the same layouts and safety checks I practiced in the labs."

During his studies, Marcus also benefited from the School of Skilled Trades & Transportation's industry connections. He secured a co-op placement with a local structural steel firm in his final term, where he earned a return offer that helped him secure initial equipment financing for his own business.

Supporting the local trades community

The new studio is designed to serve both commercial clients and individual homeowners. Marcus plans to hire two additional welders later this year and is already looking at bringing on an apprentice to train under the provincial apprenticeship rules.

Wrenford Polytechnic's School of Skilled Trades & Transportation, led by Dean Wade Hutchinson, continues to emphasise the link between in-school training and real-world employment. The school's departments, including Carpentry & Construction Trades and Electrical & Mechanical Trades, work closely with local employers to ensure graduates are ready for the workforce on day one.

Marcus invites former classmates and local businesses to visit his new showroom. He is currently accepting quotes for custom railing, gate, and sculpture projects for the spring season.

Looking ahead

For students considering the Welding & Fabrication Technician program, Marcus offers simple advice: "Get your hands dirty in the shops. Ask questions. The instructors here know the industry, and they will give you the tools you need to build a career."

Wrenford Polytechnic's School of Skilled Trades & Transportation is part of the Benchlands Campus. The school also offers apprenticeship in-school training for General Carpenter, Plumber, Construction & Maintenance Electrician, Industrial Mechanic Millwright, Automotive Service Technician, and Construction & Maintenance Electrician trades.
