James starts fitness career after personal support worker cert

From care to career

James, Personal Support Worker, is putting his skills to work in a new setting. He has started a position as a wellness support coordinator at a local wellness centre in Wrenford. The role lets him combine his hands-on care experience with a focus on prevention and daily health habits.

Building on the PSW certificate

James completed the Personal Support Worker certificate program at Wrenford Polytechnic. The seven-course certificate, offered on both the Benchlands Campus and the Mercer Street Campus, covers patient care, safety, communication, and wellness. He chose the program to get into health work quickly and to help people in his community.

"I wanted a program that would prepare me to make a difference right away," James says. "The Personal Support Worker certificate gave me the confidence to talk with people about their health and to support them in their own homes."

His new employer is a regional wellness centre that provides fitness programming and health education to the public. James works with the fitness and health promotion staff to design wellness workshops and to assist clients who are managing chronic conditions or recovering from injury. He also helps coordinate group sessions on nutrition, mobility, and stress management.

What students can learn

The Personal Support Worker certificate is designed for students who want to enter the health sector in a short time. The program includes a practicum placement that lets students work alongside experienced care providers in real settings. Graduates often move into roles in home care, long-term care, community support, or health promotion, depending on their interests and further training.

Students who are considering the Personal Support Worker certificate can apply through the provincial college application service. The program accepts intakes in September, January, and May. Tuition for the certificate is $3,480 per academic year for domestic students.

Next steps for James

James says he is exploring further education in the near future. He is interested in the Fitness & Health Promotion diploma, which covers exercise programming, coaching, and community health. He also plans to volunteer with the local health unit on upcoming wellness campaigns.

"I am just getting started," James says. "I want to keep learning and help more people stay active and healthy."

Wrenford Polytechnic congratulates James on his new role and his continued commitment to public health. For more information about the Personal Support Worker program, visit the programs page.
