Program Description

Use of software tools to model, simulate, and optimize chemical process flowsheets and operations.

About this course

In this course, you will learn how to use specialized software to model chemical processes before they are built or modified in the field. You will build flowsheet models that represent real-world operations, allowing you to test changes in temperature, pressure, and flow rates without risking physical safety or incurring production costs. The focus is on practical application, helping you understand how different unit operations interact within a larger system.

You will work through a series of laboratory exercises that guide you from simple distillation columns to more complex integrated processes. By the end of the term, you will be able to run optimization studies to improve efficiency and reduce waste, skills that are highly valued in the process industries.

Who takes this course

This course is a core requirement for students in the Chemical Process Technology program. It is typically taken in the second year, after you have completed the foundational principles of chemistry and physics.

Credits: 3 · Hours: 45

Prerequisites

Learning outcomes

  • Develop and validate steady-state process flowsheet models using industry-standard simulation software.
  • Perform sensitivity and optimization studies to identify key operating parameters.
  • Analyze simulation results to troubleshoot process inefficiencies and safety concerns.
  • Interpret mass and energy balance data generated by the simulation environment.
  • Document simulation assumptions, boundary conditions, and results in a technical report.
