Program Description

Covers advanced welding techniques for structural steel fabrication and construction applications.

About this course

MILL 2300 Structural Steel Welding builds on the fundamentals covered in Welding Processes and Safety. You will focus on advanced techniques required for structural steel fabrication and construction applications. The course takes place in the Tamarack Building welding bays, where you will work with heavy gauge materials and structural shapes.

You will practice shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) in all positions, with a particular emphasis on vertical and overhead welds. The curriculum covers reading structural drawings, interpreting welding symbols, and understanding code requirements for load-bearing structures. You will also learn inspection methods to identify common defects and prepare welds for non-destructive testing.
