Program Description

Practical application of diagnostic tools for measuring voltage, current, and signal waveforms.

About this course

This course introduces the essential diagnostic tools used in electrical trades and engineering technology. You will learn to use digital multimeters and oscilloscopes to measure electrical parameters and analyze signal behavior in real-world circuits. The focus is on safe handling, proper calibration, and accurate interpretation of data.

You will work through hands-on labs that simulate common troubleshooting scenarios found in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. By the end of the term, you will be able to confidently select the right tool for a measurement task and document your findings for technical review.

Who takes this course

ELTR 1740 is an elective course open to students in the Electrical & Mechanical Trades programs, including Electrical Techniques and Construction & Maintenance Electrician (Apprenticeship). It is also available to students in the School of Energy & Applied Engineering who need additional training in diagnostic instrumentation.

Course details

The course is delivered in the Tamarack Building shops and labs. You will need standard personal protective equipment (PPE) for all lab sessions. No prior experience with oscilloscopes is required, but familiarity with basic DC and AC circuit theory is recommended.
