Program Description

Covers hydraulic system components, schematics, and troubleshooting techniques for mobile machinery.

Course overview

This course introduces the principles of hydraulics as applied to mobile machinery and heavy equipment. You will learn how hydraulic systems generate, control, and transmit power, and how to read the schematics that technicians use every day. The focus is on practical troubleshooting: identifying symptoms, testing components, and isolating faults in real-world systems.

You will work with hydraulic pumps, directional control valves, cylinders, and motors. The course covers fluid properties, filtration, and reservoir design, as well as safety procedures for working with high-pressure systems. Labs give you hands-on experience with diagnostic tools and test benches.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify and describe the function of major hydraulic system components such as pumps, valves, actuators, and reservoirs.
  • Read and interpret hydraulic circuit schematics and diagrams used in heavy equipment maintenance.
  • Perform basic hydraulic system tests using pressure gauges and flow meters.
  • Diagnose common hydraulic system failures and propose corrective actions.
  • Apply safe work practices when handling high-pressure hydraulic systems and fluids.
